VAAFT – VIDEO ASSISTED ANAL FISTULA THERAPY

VAAFT (Video Assisted Anal Fistula Therapy) is a minimally invasive surgical technique used for the treatment of anal fistulas and Pilonidal sinus with the help of specialised endoscopes designed for this specific purpose. Fistulas are abnormal connections that form between the anal canal and the surrounding tissue, causing discomfort and complications. Traditional fistula treatments often involved complex procedures and lengthy recovery times. However, VAAFT revolutionized the field by offering a more efficient and patient-friendly approach.

Now a days, same technique is also used for treatment of Pilonidal sinus in the same minimally invasive way. Video assisted internal vision of the sinus has resulted in patient friendly treatment of this disease without excising tissues resulting in minimal pain, early discharge from the hospital and early return to job.

During a VAAFT procedure, a small video camera (VAAFT telescope) is inserted into the fistula tract or the sinus, allowing the surgeon to visualize the it from inside on a monitor. With the aid of specialized instruments, the surgeon can then identify and treat the fistula or the sinus accurately. The technique involves the use of electric current to destroy the fistula tract and seal the opening, promoting healing and preventing recurrence. LASER therapy can also be delivered under vision with the help of VAAFT scope and combination of LASER and VAAFT has been used very effectively in treatment of anal fistula and pilonidal sinus

VAAFT offers several advantages over traditional surgical methods. It is a minimally invasive procedure, resulting in reduced pain, minimal scarring, and shorter recovery time. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, eliminating the need for prolonged hospital stays. Additionally, VAAFT has shown promising results in terms of faster healing, lower recurrence rates, and improved patient satisfaction

The development of VAAFT has significantly improved the management of anal fistulas, providing a less invasive and more effective treatment option for patients. However, it is essential to consult with a qualified healthcare professional to determine the most appropriate treatment approach based on individual circumstances
